What We Discussed

The Celebrating Disability Inclusion Leaders webinar brought together a diverse panel of educators, sports professionals, and community leaders to discuss practical strategies and real-world experiences in advancing disability inclusion in sports. Hosted by Paralympians Blake Cochrane and Mitch Gourley, the event aligned with the 2024 International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) theme: “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Section 1: Inclusive Education Practices

The first segment featured Gina Oliver, a teacher at Iona College, and Travis Zimmer, a Sport4All Inclusion Coach working with the City of Greater Geelong Council. They discussed the impact of a Paralympic education session organized at Iona College. Gina shared how the session transformed her students’ perceptions of disability and inclusion, highlighting increased empathy and interest in adaptive sports. Travis emphasised the importance of experiential learning in schools and how such sessions can break down barriers and foster a more inclusive mindset among young people.

In this segment, Darcy Thomas, Programs & Events Lead at Netball NSW, and Jenny Crandell, a Sport4All Inclusion Coach, discussed how state sporting organisations are driving inclusion. Darcy outlined Netball NSW’s initiatives to create accessible pathways for players with disabilities, including adaptive programs and inclusive events. Jenny shared her experience collaborating with Netball NSW to implement these programs, emphasising the importance of organisational commitment and strategic planning.

The final segment featured Michelle Harris, Manager of Sector Development & Consulting with GippSport and President of Swimming Victoria, alongside Shiv Wheeler, a Sport4All Inclusion Coach with GippSport. They explored the unique challenges and successes of promoting inclusion in regional areas. Michelle discussed initiatives led by GippSport to overcome barriers such as limited resources and geographic isolation. Shiv shared stories of community driven projects that have successfully increased participation among people with disabilities in regional sports.

Attendees left with practical insights and actionable strategies to implement in their own contexts, reinforcing the collective commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible sporting environment for all.
